Nelson East-West cycle link

Here is the feedback that we have provided to Council. We are particularly concerned by the proposed route per the pink line in the diagram below…
- The proposed cycleway route traverses uncomfortably steep gradients on roads (which are also “rat runs” for motorist vehicles). We recommend the cycling route connects from Nile Street East via Sussex St to Selwyn St (30km/h zone) to Rutherford St then splitting south to Waimea Road and north to Hardy Street. This provides a more direct route for cycles with reduced gradients, greater connectivity to the existing cycling network, improved access to student residential catchment and provides a cycling link across the CBD.
- This route would traverse the two roundabouts on Nile Street. Treatments that calm traffic speeds and provide pedestrian crossings on each arm such as those on Victory Square (but as much lower cost and disruption to install) will be needed to ensure safe passage.
- The graphic below doesn’t show existing cycleways (eg: Waimea Road, Rutherford St, Vanguard St, Glousctershire, Hardy St, etc) nor cycleways under construction (eg: Bridge St Active Transport corridor).
- Conversersely it does not show the significant gap in the current cycleways of the Nile St bridge. Inclusion of a safe cycling space on Nile Bridge is essential to the East-West Link particularly with consented development occurring in the Matai.
